Marsha will be showing many of her up-cycled creations on December 4, from 6-8PM at the Art Alliance in Lemont, meet her there!
I’m Marsha, a vintage obsessed Etsy shop owner and State College native who’s lived here most of my life. I did head off to Pittsburgh for quite a few years looking to experience new things. I went to college, got a job as an Environmental Scientist, and found my hubby Ryan. We headed back home to settle down and be around my enormous family.
I decided it was time to do something new. I’ve always been a history buff and lover of all things old. Plus I really loved
creating things when I was small. My love of antiques and creating ended up becoming an Etsy adventure that I love.
Etsy is a very cool site where artists reside. I really felt Etsy and I were a good fit so decided to open up shop. That was two years ago and I now have THREE Etsy shops that I adore.
The first, Vintage Jewelry Chest, is where I keep a huge stash of vintage and antique jewelry along with fashion accessories and home décor. I have over 800 items posted now and an absolute explosion of inventory in my tiny office. I really do have the most fun running around picking treasures at flea markets so I’m sure my inventory will continue to grow. Here is some current inventory...
During my vintage picking adventures I sadly found so many damaged old jewels. It was sad to see these beautiful, fine quality works of art discarded and mistreated. I began to think that perhaps I could save them and that’s how An Old Soul Creations was born. Restoring old jewelry and assembling it into new design is a wonderful creative outlet I really needed. It’s so fun to make something discarded shine again. I love using old earrings, chains, charms, brooches and beaded necklaces in my designs. I also search out old factory stock stones from the 1940’s to 1960’s for their amazing quality.
I'm especially fond of exceptional vintage 1940’s / 1950's glass Harlequin opals so I have them in a huge variety of colors, shapes, sizes and styles. They are completed with only the finest 14K gold filled metal components to compliment the quality of the stones. I’ve created earrings, necklaces and rings in 5 colors and 14K gold filled metal.
One of my favorite jewelry items of all time is the 50s Rockabilly cardigan clip. There was something so cool about the 50's...poodle skirts, ponytails, bobby socks, cardigans, diners, rock and roll! My cardigan clips are created with ALL vintage 50s components I've found during my picking adventures, down to the special little dangling charm that decorates each design.
I have a crazy obsession with 50's / 60's beaded necklace. My dream is to have those grand multistrand necklaces in every color! Inspired by this and my attraction to sparkling brooches, I've started pairing the two to create glorious statement necklaces. I love the very idea of this because it seemed that brooches were losing popularity the past few decades and I'm so happy that they are being worn and adored again! Here's a Japanese blue pearl necklace and the most amazing vintage 1940’s Crown Trifari blue rhinestone brooch. The brooch is exceptionally fine with rhodium plating, varied shade of high quality rhinestones and an elaborate flower cluster design:
And as for my third Etsy shop, Rustic Hearth and Home, I was just in the holiday mood lately and wanted to make something that would add a little festivity to people’s homes. I’m not sure why the idea popped into my head but I decided to make some rustic grapevine napkin rings in themes for autumn and winter. They’ve been quite a hit and
customers love them for their holiday tables. I’m already in the middle of creating some new designs involving rustic Christmas ornaments and have tons of ideas popping into my head as I type.
So I plan on creating my way though the holiday season and hope to see you all at the Restitch Studio celebration in Lemont. It’s sure to be a fun event to kick off the holidays!
Find me at:
Every business that celebrates the start of doing business calls their opening "grand", but truly, this one will be! It's not just giveaways and info about what Restitch Studio can do for you (there will be that too). It's an evening out to enjoy great local music, great food and fun demonstrations.
You should come as a couple, a family, or a girls' night out, there will be something to interest everyone (who doesn't love great food and music?)
The big day is still a month away, so for the next few weeks, I will be featuring each one of the businesses I am partnering with for this very swank event!
Here is what you have to look forward to:
Marsha Cavanaugh, Jewelry Artist, An Old Soul Creations
OverheaD, a local (and extremely talented) band, playing a mix of 40's stuff, jazz, classic rock, & Christmas tunes
Café Lemont, providing their renowned coffee
M&C Cakery, providing fresh baked goodies (this might be what I am looking forward to most, quite frankly.)
Also (as the flier indicates) some fun demos about upcycling junk into cool and festive wrapping solutions, giveaways, and of course many of my original and upcycled vintage fashions, many on live models. Pencil it in (okay, let's get real, put it on you iPhone or Outlook calendar) and I hope to see you there!
